Statement of Intent

We want our children at St Thomas’ to have an accepting and welcoming view of the world outside of Ilkeston and outside the United Kingdom, broadening their understanding of other cultures and customs. Our French curriculum includes cultural background as well as the traditional speaking, listening, reading and writing lessons to ensure the pupils have a firm understanding of life in France and the Francophone world, laying the foundations for future language learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond

Aims

Our French Curriculum aims are covered in a fun and well balanced way, ensuring that all pupils can:

  • understand and respond to spoke and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions whilst continually improving accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Breadth of study

The pupils will study all four areas of language learning in each session, learning about a new topic every over half term throughout Key Stage 2. Alongside learning the phonics which will allow them to learn new words and pronounce them accurately, the pupils will encounter familiar traditional tales from the UK, allowing them to be familiar with a text whilst learning a new language. They will also learn through songs and games.
